What they do

One-line writing uses the pen numbers 1, 2, 3, 3A, 4, 5, 6, 6A, to make a single solid stroke for writing, mark-making and drawing.

Two-line writing is done by the pens 7, 8, 9 and 10, sometimes called split, or scroll pens and are used to make decorative double-line letters and marks.

Originally, the five-line pen was used by composers and musicians to draw the musical staff upon which the notes are placed. Today the five-line pen is used for decorative writing and designs.

All the pens can lift on its edge and write a hairline or make a flourish
